Celebrating Norwegian Constitution Day in Washington State

Today, May 17th, is Norway’s Constitution Day: “Syttende Mai”. While we don’t have a lot of Norwegian in each of our family’s histories’, we do happen to love the country and it’s culture, and we also happened to name our son after one of the country’s lovely cities: Bergen.

Incidentally, we visited the town of Poulsbo, Washington on the Kitsap Peninsula in celebration of Mother’s Day last weekend. Poulsbo is nicknamed, “Little Norway”, and is an adorable small town filled with inviting shops, restaurants, and a bakery that has me wanting to hop aboard a ferry right now just for one bite of their cream-cheese filled Viking cinnamon cups.

Even closer to home is Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood, another Scandinavian hub, where a huge celebration is taking place today. We’ll be joining the festivities, and are looking forward to shouting a little, “Hipp, Hipp, Hurra!” as we watch along the parade route.

Checking in for the Train and Checking out Seattle’s King Street Station

As you may have read, we gave train travel with a toddler a try on a recent weekend trip to Portland, Oregon. While we may still be undecided on whether or not it’s a better option for us than taking the car, we know one thing for sure: It beats flying.

While Slaed dealt with getting the car parked downtown, I was charged with getting us settled at the station. This involved checking us in for our train ride down to Portland, dropping our bags to be checked, and scoping out our seating situation because we were riding coach and didn’t yet have an assigned seat. All these great responsibilities needed to be taken care of with Bergen riding along in the backpack carrier. Sounds like an ordeal, right?

But would you have guessed getting those tasks accomplished took all of about 5 minutes?

First, I checked us in at the counter. No line. All I needed was identification and my confirmation information, and Slaed (my travel companion) didn’t even need to be present.
Next, at that same counter, the friendly gentleman took our two roller bags.
Finally, I walked over to the kiosk near our departure door and waited for the seat assignment process to start.
When it was time to board, we just simply walked through the door, and climbed into our assigned train car. No security. No scanners. No required rules about staying seated, and paying attention to this or that.

TIP: When riding coach, if you are concerned about your seating assignment, arrive at the station early to get in line. If you don’t care about your seat, I wouldn’t worry about it. If you want to know your seat assignment ahead of time, pay the extra money and ride business class.

What a breath of fresh air compared to the airport shenanigans we go through.

Since we were early, I was second in line. Waiting really didn’t matter to me though because from where I stood, I could take in the King Street Station’s new (or in fact, old) look.

The King Street Station recently went through extensive restoration to bring the station both up to date, and back to the beauty it exuded at it’s beginning in 1906. Of note, the ceiling was restored and recreated to match it’s original look, the floors were cleaned and restored, and “modernized” light fixtures were removed to make way for fixtures that fit the character of the building and architecture.

The result is quite impressive, and I felt lucky to get to experience the station in all it’s glory.

Travel by Train with a Toddler: It’s a Toss Up

In our family, we’ve made it a bit of a tradition to travel South to Oregon during the month of April. We’ve added other spots into the mix, but no matter what, Portland is always involved. The birth of Bergen hasn’t gotten in the way of our tradition, though our itineraries may have slowed down some.

Last year for our April Oregon trip, we left the car at home, and decided to give train travel with a baby a try. We were big fans, and thought we’d give it another whirl; this time with a 20 month old. I must admit, I had hesitations now that Bergen is a young toddler nearing the 2 year mark, however I was also comforted by all the “amenities” that attracted us to the train in the first place.

And you know what? After our recent experience, we really are undecided, and still given the choice again, we don’t know what we would choose for our mode of transportation! Here we give you our “pros & cons” of traveling by train vs. car:

Pros:

You don’t have to drive. No worries of navigation. No aggravating stop and go traffic to sit through. The pressure is off.
Little ones are not confined to car seats or seat belts. Bergen is on the move, and that is exactly what he is allowed to do on the train. Slaed and I took turns walking with him up and down the line of train cars. He could stop at a set of empty seats and climb around for a while, he could interact with other passengers, and check out the view from different vantage points. You can bring the car seat aboard the train, and we did that with Bergen last year, which worked out really well for napping, but it’s not necessary.
You can be social. It’s much easier to chat with your travel companions on the train, in fact some seating situations even allow you to sit across from each other. You also have the chance to meet and socialize with fellow passengers, and I see them as one more distraction tool in my “keep Bergen occupied” tool kit.
The view. The view is better on Amtrak Cascades than on I-5, and I’m guessing most train routes would be the same. Also, you actually get to enjoy the view without being concerned of driving off the road.
You don’t have to stop to eat. Whether you pack your own meals and snacks or pick something up in the bistro car, you can enjoy your food without taking time away from getting to your destination. The bistro car also just gave us something else to do with Bergen. He happily sat on my lap, and devoured a bag of pretzels while I got to take in the scenery.

Cons:

The train ride is longer than the car ride. However, if you encounter traffic on the highway or stop for a long meal or rest, the duration may even out. The duration may also even out if you need to stop frequently for a baby (nursing, diaper changes, etc.), as we would have had to do last year.
More coordination. Instead of just loading up in the car, you have to get yourself to the train station, worry about parking, check bags, and on and on. This is by far more simple than traveling by plane, but still takes time. Time that you could be logging in the car getting to your destination.
Work! It’s a lot of work to keep an active and busy toddler from disturbing everyone traveling with you on the train. Bergen did not want to sit still. In the car, we time his nap to coincide with our departure time, which gives us at least an hour of solace. We didn’t even want to risk a failed napping attempt, so he napped before the train ride.
You could get stuck. Weather, slides, and other trains can all get in the way of your train arriving at your destination on-time.

Tips for Train Travel with a Toddler:

Bring a partner! Slaed and I took turns. One of us would run off with Bergen for awhile, and the other could kick back and relax for a bit.
Do business class. It will cost you more per ticket, but with business class, you get an assigned seat ahead of time. Non-business classers have to wait in line at the station to get their seat assignment, which can take up a lot of your precious time.
Take advantage of the bistro and dining cars. We can’t emphasize this enough. On the return trip, we actually spent the majority of our time in the dining car. If you end up with a less than ideal seating assignment, it’s a great alternative.
Just like we’d suggest on the airplane, don’t be in rush to board. We enjoy and wander around the train station for as long as possible before making our way to our train car. There will be plenty of time to get settled and explore that space!

Seattle Area Adventure: Flipping for the Seattle Aquarium

We love it when family and friends visit. Not only do we get to spend good, quality time with our loved ones, but it gives us an excuse to explore our city (with less guilt about leaving chores and house duties for another day). Afterall, we have to show off our sites, right?

Rain, even in Seattle can put a kink in our step, especially when it’s a downpour, which was the case on this particular day. To stay dry, we sought shelter at the Seattle Aquarium. It would actually be a first time visit for Bergen and me, and I was curious to see his reaction to all the sea life. He loves our visits to the zoo, and we’ve gone to a couple of very small aquariums, but this was his first full-on larger aquarium trip.

We spent a little over an hour and a half exploring the space. I would have loved to have just a little bit more time, but lunch and nap time were looming. Even in that short amount of time though we became fans of the place and we picked up a few tips and tricks.

1. Don’t miss the Window on Washington Waters exhibit at the entrance. At 120,000 gallons of water, this exhibit showcases over 800 fish and invertebrates. Currently, at 10 am, 11:30 am, and 12:15 pm, a scuba diver swims around and answers questions from the audience. It’s quite a sight to see! Crowds happen, and if you or your little one are overwhelmed, sneak upstairs to the cafe. You can look down on the exhibit, and still hear and see all the action, but it’s less congested.

2. Take your time. With Bergen, we tend to rush as he’s always on the move, and just breezes through things, but when we stuck around, more magical experiences happened. When we were a little more patient, we saw…

3. Leave the Stroller Behind. If your little one is walking, let them roam on their own. You’ll both get more exercise! For non-walkers, consider a carrier. For one, it’s crowded. There are also a lot of obstacles you’ll run into that will make lugging a stroller around a pain.

4. Make sure sights are at kid level. We know Bergen is a mover, but sometimes he would rush past amazing tanks, pools, and other exhibits as if they weren’t even there. At first we wondered why he didn’t care, then we realized that to him (at his height), it was just a plain, boring wall. When we lifted him up to see, a whole new world opened up for him!

5. Burn off steam at the Underwater Dome. This unique exhibit gave us a chance to “relax” a bit. The dome gives viewers a 360 degree view with a feeling like you are actually under the sea, and tank is one of the largest exhibits at 400,000 gallons. With little sets of stairs to climb and so much to see, we could let Bergen view at his own pace, and he could walk right up to the windows to watch all kinds of creatures swim, float, and whirl by.

First Time Experience with University of Washington’s Cherry Blossoms

With some time to spare between errands and a looming naptime, Bergen and I decided to make a quick stop at the University of Washington Quad to view the amazing display of cherry blossoms. These blooms put on quite a show every spring, but after living here in Seattle for almost 8 years, this was actually my first time (and Bergen’s) witnessing the event. Sure I see the trees on our walks in the neighborhood, and other areas around town. Now I know though: The Cherry Blossoms in the Quad are different. It’s really an experience! And the beauty took my breath away.

Bergen loved running around on the brick pathways. He had a huge smile on his face the entire time, and I think he quite enjoyed all the people running around snapping photos and making a fuss.

However, he really didn’t care much about looking up, so the cherry blossom display didn’t really matter to him. He had other interests. What’s so great about a few cherry blossoms? He’d rather investigate a puddle.

Seattle Area Adventure: Getting Lost in West Seattle’s Schmitz Preserve Park

Easter weekend here in Seattle brought absolutely beautiful weather. The kind of weather that reminded us of why we live where we live. Those mountains that surround our city? We could actually see them in the distance due to clear skies and sunshine. Did we take advantage of the circumstances in all it’s incredible glory? Not really. Between getting a tooth pulled and needing to make our newly remodeled house look halfway presentable, we were tied up for much of the three days.

We certainly got a lot done, AND we did manage to squeeze in one amazing morning so I can’t complain, really. Given the weather and given the holiday, which I also see as a fresh start and a time to enjoy all things “new”, we decided to check out a place a that I’d been meaning to explore for a while: Schmitz Preserve Park in West Seattle.

Upon entering the park, we really had no route or destination in mind. We knew the park was just 53 acres with easy to follow trails, so losing our way wasn’t really on our minds. We let intuition take over, and simply enjoyed our surroundings. While hiking among old growth trees with birds chirping and water gently rolling by in peaceful streams, we got lost. We weren’t thinking about all the concrete and housing that encircles the park, just put one foot in front of the other.

Before long our adventure brought us to an unexpected creature. Lucky for us, he wasn’t too threatening and we were able to move on without incident. We did marvel at the creative use of a fallen tree!

Between some muddy areas and tree obstacles, I was glad that we went the ergo carrier route instead of risking it with the stroller. This was after several days of dry weather. I can only imagine the amount of sogginess you’d have to deal with given our usual conditions. I was also glad I had a hiking partner to let me know if I was clearing Bergen’s head as I ducked under logs.

Again, not really knowing where the path might lead, we scurried up quite a steep hill. I really had no expectations in my mind other than making it to the top. Wondering what greeted us? A beautiful view of the city? A look out toward Elliott Bay and beyond? No. A sidewalk. A sidewalk and some houses. We were out the park just like that.

We weren’t about to hike back the way we came, so off we went to find another entrance. After just a couple minutes of walking, we discovered our way back in just behind an elementary school bearing the park’s name. And a warm welcome we were given.

This time, we walked straight through to the opposite side (via the Schmitz Park to Alki Trail) remarking at how lucky the residents surrounding the space must feel. A beautiful forested area ready to explore, investigate and learn from right in their backyard.

Schmitz Preserve Park was donated to the city in the early 1900’s. Ferdinand Schmitz set the land aside and gave a large portion of the park to the city because he hated seeing the amazing Northwest forest dwindle away in place of more and more homes and other buildings.

- Hours: 6am-10pm
If you stick to the main trail (Schmitz Park to Alki Trail) you could probably get away with using a heavy duty jogging stroller, but I’d recommend going the carrier route for little ones.
Be aware that parts of the trail are bound to be wet and muddy, so plan footwear accordingly.
Need something to entice tired little legs? Plan to exit near the Alki Community Center. An amazing park awaits and just a few short blocks away, you’re at the beach!

Embracing the Arrival of Spring at the Seattle’s Washington Park Arboretum

With the sun beaming in through the windows and gorgeous blue sky greeting us this morning, I knew we had to get outside while it lasted. What better way to enjoy the spring weather than at our nearby Washington Park Arboretum? Little legs can run free while I take some time to check out what’s in bloom, and try to soak in as much warmth and rays before the clouds return.

From the moment those stroller wheels touched ground inside the park boundary, Bergen and his buddy Dylan were in their element. Pointing at the trees, following robins as they fluttered by, and “remarking” about whatever else they noticed. Soon stroller patience was over, and it was time to get out and really explore.

Pink was around every corner. I love the green of Western Washington just as much as the next gal, but it’s nice to have some variety back in our landscape.

It was clear the birds were grateful for this day just like the rest of us at the park (from runners, to cyclists, to dog walkers and school children). Their songs became our background noise and soon the boys were doing their best to sound just like them or at least laugh at my attempts.

Toward the end of our time at the park, Bergen proved he loved being out running the trails even more than I thought. While he’s a happy guy, he’s not one for cuddling or creating tender moments. He’s much too busy for such things and would rather be off getting his hands dirty and making messes. Today was different though. After a shriek, he came barreling down the path in my direction as I was crouched down taking photos and gave me a great big hug.

It didn’t stop there though. No, Bergen had more love to give. After he was finished with me, he scrambled right over to his buddy for his very first “friend hug”.

Little Free Library: Sharing the Gift of Literacy One Neighborhood at a Time

Bergen loves books. He can’t get enough of them. It’s the one thing that will always amuse him. Everyday, at least 3 times a day, he sits down in front of his bookshelf and goes to town: Laughing, pointing, babbling to himself. The books are not always facing the right way, and sometimes he throws one aside after just a quick glance, but the wheels are turning and he’s figuring things out. We also have the routine of reading to him before bed each night, and it’s the one and only time where he’ll actually sit on our laps for an extended period of time.

We visit the public library once a week to pick out new books. Our visits are always a whirlwind. In and out, and unfortunately not a lot of time to explore because if we spend anymore than 5 minutes, every book on every shelf would be on the floor strewn about every which way.

We’ve discovered a new way for Bergen to get his little hands on even more books and he never has to step food into a building: “Little Free Library“. And it just so happens, an adorable one lives just a few blocks from our house. I decided we should pay the library a visit on our walk today, so in preparation we picked out 2 books to donate.

After browsing through the selection, we in turn chose 2 books to take away to enjoy at our house: Jingle Babies (Bergen loves “reading” books that feature real people, especially babies) and a non-fiction book all about baby animals.

These little libraries house 20-30 books. The books are “free” and people are encouraged to give and take from the collection. Most of the libraries I’ve seen are in front of a home, but apparently they can also be found by coffee shops, parks, and other public places.

We hope to make regular visits and exchanges to our neighborhood Little Free Library, and might even seek out more libraries to visit around Seattle. Who knows? Maybe one will even pop-up in our travels near and far from our home city!

Wear Your Toddler Out and Dive into Seattle History with a Visit to MOHAI

We were itching to check out the Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI) in it’s new home in Seattle’s Southlake Union neighborhood. When we decided to visit last weekend, we knew we would leave impressed and happy to have spent some time stepping back in time. We did not however, know that we’d leave the museum with one worn out toddler.

MOHAI reopened on December 29th in the former Naval Reserve Armory, and we welcomed the change. The former location will be bulldozed and demolished to make way for the new Highway 520 bridge, and the residents and visitors of Seattle will benefit from the wide open space to learn and reminisce.

We went into our visit with an open mind, and a loose plan. Bergen would start out in the stroller as we explored, and when he couldn’t tolerate the restraint anymore, we would take turns playing “follow the leader” around the museum (with Bergen always being the leader), and maybe pay a visit to the children’s play area.

We started out in the atrium and took some time to take in the space and get oriented. The first thing to catch our eye was the enormous Wawona sculpture. Made from a recycled ship’s hull, the work of art climbs it’s way to the ceiling giving us an idea of the true grandness of the space. To tie everything together even more, there is a cutout in the floor just below the sculpture to view the water of Lake Union.

With it’s wide-open space and plenty of interactive exhibits (including the Wawona), the first floor-atrium is a great place for kids:

You can actually sneak inside the sculpture, have a look down to the water and peek through the holes (or in Bergen’s case, talk through them).
Opposite of the sculpture is a unique contraption that houses Seattle icons like the Rainier “R”, a cycling Ivar’s clam, and the old “All Roads Lead to the Dog House” sign. Each icon lights up or moves in someway when you turn a crank below.
Desk-size touch screens allow kids and adults to play various “games”. Through a series of questions, your ideal Seattle neighborhood (to live in) can be chosen for you.

As we meandered upstairs via the gorgeous glass elevator, Bergen held out for just a bit longer in the stroller. We learned about the Great Northern Railroad, and checked out the exhibit where kids can hammer away on spikes that activate a screen to build railroad trestles.

At this point, he could take it no longer. Bergen needed to be set free. He was released from the stroller, wasting no time, sped up and down the hallways of the 2nd floor, toddled in and out of exhibit rooms, and showed off his signature pointing, eying all the wonders hanging in the atrium. Thankfully we found out the museum is for the most part, childproofed. Anything delicate, special, and breakable is behind glass. The railings are safe, there’s nothing to knock over, and no tiny pieces to pick-up and pop in the mouth.

When we had enough with the 2nd floor, we cruised up to the 3rd floor Maritime Gallery. Here you can take in beautiful views of Lake Union, and the surrounding Seattle neighborhoods, watch for seaplanes, and marvel at the amazingly crafted wooden boats. The star of the show is the old U.S. Navy periscope.

Instead of heading back down on the elevator though, Bergen much preferred to get his exercise and take the stairs.

We couldn’t leave without checking out the kid’s play area on the 1st floor. While Bergen and Slaed put on puppet shows, built with blocks, get to know Seattle through books, I got to sneak away and take a few extra pictures and gather more information about the exhibits.

Are you wondering just how worn out our little tot was after all this activity at MOHAI? Well, after a satisfying lunch, Bergen slept a whopping 3 HOURS. I think it’s safe to say our visit was well worth it!

Travel the World in Your Own Backyard: Seattle’s 21 International Sister Cities

Did you know that Seattle currently has sister city relationships with 21 cities throughout the world? Up until recently, I certainly did not. The establishment of sister cities fosters relationships between two locales thus creating greater understanding of their respective cultures. The exchange program began in 1956 thanks to President Dwight Eisenhower. His intention was essentially one of world peace and less conflict; or at least more peaceful relationships between the United States and other countries of the world.

My interest in sister cities began about three years ago. Upon researching our trip to Bergen, Norway we found out about the sister city relationship with Seattle. We made a point to visit the park in Bergen that is home to a totem pole given to the city of Bergen from the city of Seattle. It was neat to experience a little piece of home so far away. In fact, we were so touched by the experience that we chose to name our son after the city that holds such a special place in our hearts.

My plan is to honor as many Seattle Sister Cities as I can in 2013 with the ultimate goal being to highlight all 21 cities. Some of the ways that we can “travel” to the cities will be fairly easy, like visiting local Seattle parks created to showcase the sister city relationship or taking in an exhibit at a local museum that highlights the city. Attending festivals representing the country of the sister city is also a possibility, but with many others, I’ll have to get quite creative, and really keep my eyes out for events and activities that will allow us to experience the city.

Besides, it’ll keep us busy since you as you may have read, we are holding off on international travel (aside from maybe British Columbia) with Bergen this year.

Wild Tales of…2012: A Year of Travel and Adventure

Our first full year of travel as a family and adventure of three proved to be chock full of new experiences, and beautiful destinations both near and far from our Seattle home. As I sat down to reflect on just what we were up to in 2012, it turns out we were quite busy! Each month seemed to find us packing our bags or at least a backpack in preparation for some kind of escape.

January

A rare month of staying close to home. We explored local gardens, tromped in the snow (while it lasted), and most memorably checked out our local Roller Derby Team, the Rat City Roller Girls.

February

The wedding of a good friend from high school had us traveling across the country (Bergen’s 2nd trip back east) to the Washington, D.C. area, and my hometown. Bergen had a blast at his first wedding, and even stole a dance; ergo carrier and all. We also squeezed in a day of sight seeing around NW Montgomery County, MD, and fittingly spent President’s Day on the Mall in Washington, D.C. taking in some of the newer monuments.

March

Ready to escape the cold and rain, we traveled down to Bergen’s Gramma’s new home in the Phoenix area. We made sure to coordinate our trip with the Mariner’s Spring Training schedule, and took in a few ballgames. We went on our first true hike as a family; trying out the ergo as a backpack carrier.

April

April was another month of firsts for Bergen. Bergen’s first cold. Followed by and coinciding with Bergen’s first camping trip at Cape Disappointment on the Washington coast with a night in Astoria, Oregon thrown in. Later on in the month, Bergen tried a new mode of transportation. He went on his first train ride to visit friends in Portland, Oregon.

May

With more friends and relatives for Bergen to see and meet, we spent Memorial Day weekend in the Denver, Colorado area. We visited Slaed’s hometown of Wheat Ridge along with nearby Golden, took in a Rapids Soccer game, and squeezed in a day in the mountains. Bergen and I even got to see Red Rocks for the first time.

June

While we wish a visit to New York and Connecticut could have been under better circumstances, it was quite special for Bergen to meet so many Aunts, Uncles, and cousins at my Grandfather’s funeral. We miss Poppy so very much. Not many photographs were taken during that visit, but this one with Bergen sporting one of his Great Grandpa’s well-worn, signature hats seems fitting.

July

Along with a crowd of friends, we set out on the road for Hayden Lake, Idaho. I couldn’t stop looking at the view, and we really got the chance to practice relaxation by just enjoying our surroundings and company!

August

Summer in Seattle is the absolute best. That’s when we kick back, and enjoy the hard earned days, weeks, and months of non-stop gray and drizzle in the winter and spring. We got to explore many local and state parks in the spectacular August weather, but the most memorable was probably our gondola ride up Crystal Mountain where we were rewarded with unbelievable views of Mount Rainier.

September

By then, we were ready for another road trip. This time to the Victorian town of Port Townsend, Washington on the Olympic Peninsula. A ferry ride offered Bergen the chance to escape from his carseat for part of the journey, and once we arrived there was so much beauty to enjoy.

October

Bergen and I decided to tag along on one of Slaed’s work trips to North Central Washington. Even though it was just one day, we pretended like we were on vacation in the Bavarian town of Leavenworth, sampled local beer and wine and searched for fall colors and salmon. We even spotted a rattlesnake!

November

Getting there may have been tough, and coming home was even harder, but without a doubt, our vacation in Kauai was the highlight of 2012.

December

We braved the skies with Bergen one more time for a trip down to Truckee, California to celebrate Christmas with my whole family. Bergen loved hiking through the snow, and even more, he loved getting to spend quality time with his cousins, two of which were born just a few months apart from him.

Busy, busy, busy, but really, we wouldn’t have it any other way. We have much in store for 2013, some tickets already purchased, and some travel dreams just beginning to brew. Stay tuned as Bergen hopes to add to his growing list of states (15 so far) visited, and we try to keep up! Just what do we have in store? So far…a week in Washington’s San Juan Islands in just few weeks, a repeat trip to the Phoenix area to see Gramma and more baseball, another train adventure to Oregon, two trips to Montana, and…many more adventures in the works.

A Christmas Evening in Downtown Seattle: 3 Free Happenings

Since nearly all of our Christmas shopping was completed, last Sunday it was time to kick back, and finally take in some Christmas festivities without the fear of the to-do list looming over us. It turns out that all three of the sights we saw on Sunday evening were free with two of them collecting donations for very worthy children’s causes.

1. Teddy Bear Suite: Fairmont Olympic Hotel

Inside this magical hotel in Suite 342 is an adorable little hideaway full of teddy bears! When we reached the suite, we were promptly asked to set the stroller aside. I must admit, we were worried that Bergen would destroy the place since we didn’t exactly know what to expect. We were pleasantly surprised. Sure, we couldn’t just let Bergen run wild, but the place is made for kids. Teddy Bears galore to touch and hug. A big bed that you are allowed to sit on. Beautiful Christmas decorations with plenty of lights and sparkle.

The lobby of the hotel was also decked out with a gorgeous Christmas tree adorned with oversize ornaments, and their own pastry chef’s gingerbread house creation, which includes our newest addition to the “skyline”: the great wheel. And finally, the lower lobby has a lovely display with Santa by the fireside checking his list!

2. Gingerbread Village: Sheraton Hotel

Unlike the Teddy Bear Suite, this was not the first time for us to visit the Sheraton’s Gingerbread Village. It’s become an annual tradition for Slaed and I to see what the amazing architecture and culinary artists will come up with in their designs. Depending on the time of day, and day of the week, your wait will vary. On this particular Sunday evening, we waited about 20 minutes. Certainly doable for a couple of adults with plenty of people-watching, but for Bergen, he needed a little more convincing. A “snacktrap” full of cheerios did the trick.

This year’s theme is “Once Upon a Time”, so each of the creations was an elaborately made castle (6 in all) from a fairy tale. My favorite was the the “Brothers Grimm Castle of Fairy Tales”. I’m a sucker for traditional, and loved the little details like the stained glass windows and actual working drawbridge! Slaed’s favorite was the “Alice in Wonderland” castle.

3. Snow Show: Pacific Place

Our last stop before dinner was to see the snow show at Pacific Place. At 6pm each evening (11/23/12-12/31/12), snow falls throughout the atrium! The experience is complete with festive Christmas music blaring and even a visit from Santa. Bergen thought the snow was nice for a few seconds, but he was more interested in dancing, and taking laps around the 2nd floor where we were viewing the show. Certainly okay by us: What better way to wear yourself out just in time to hit the sack?

Braving the Seattle Grays One Walk at a Time

Yesterday Bergen, Norman, and I found ourselves back at the Arboretum. Both guys needed a walk and some outside time, and I wanted to see what the Arboretum was up to as winter nears.

Pleasantly surprised to see a burst of purple color.

I decided to stop into the Visitor’s Center, something I’d usually skip. I could come up with a bunch of great reasons to encourage one to go inside, and explain why we decided to go in this day, but let’s be honest, the real reason is that I heard they were now selling coffee and Cougar Mountain cookies. Along with my fresh cup of coffee, I picked up a bag of the special Arboretum Blend coffee beans from Zoka Roasters. Someone on my Christmas list is very lucky. The volunteer at the desk greeted us, and said something that made me stop and think: “My…you’re brave to be out and about on a day like today…”.

It wasn’t even raining.

We’ve done some things with Bergen that others might think twice about, but a walk outside? That’s not so brave. Right? For us, it’s more of a necessity. Outside in nature, Bergen is happy. He’s calm. He’s content. The puddles. Rocks. Grass to run his hands through. It’s also the wide-space allowing him to toddle to his heart’s content. And an added bonus: Wonderful naps at home follow a good romp outside.

Gifts for the Adventure Family: $30 or Less

Gift giving for to me opens up a host of emotions. If I have figured out the perfect present to get my recipient, I’m overjoyed, and can’t wait to get out there and make the purchase or pull the trigger on the website. Sometimes, I have a great gift idea, but it’s out of my budget range. Well, that’s just disheartening. Back to the drawing board. Then there’s the frustrated and clueless feeling I get when I have no idea what to get someone. There can be so many reasons…they are picky, they have everything, or I don’t see them often enough to get a good idea of what they might want or need.

To help you out a bit and curb the emotional roller coaster, I put together a little list of ideas for the adventure families out there. When compiling, I had adventure kids, and adventure moms and dads in mind, but you may find that these gift ideas work for just about anyone! The idea is to make travel and getting out and about a little more fun and a little easier (and also not break the bank). That way, maybe you can just stick to that overjoyed feeling that is what gift giving is all about!

1. The Kiddy Platter by Smarty Parents

This is no ordinary placemat. The platter has a rubber rim making it super sticky, and thus allowing it to cling to any surface. It’s easy to clean and dishwasher safe. I love it as a gift for adventure kids because it fits easily in any bag or suitcase or in the seat-back pocket of your car. As Bergen gets older, he’ll be able to put this on his lap to do projects in the car. I’m all for making car travel more fun! The gutter is removable, and kids can draw and write with dry erase or window markers (and the surface wipes clean).

2. Annual State Park Pass

Here in Washington State a mere $30 gets you into any of our state parks and recreation lands for an entire year. Anytime your recipient wants to head to a state park, instead of paying the usual onetime $10 fee, they’ll be good to go for “free” thanks to your gift. Of course, the gift also supports our wonderful park system; making sure that future generations get to enjoy the great Washington outdoors. Think of all the awesome hiking, birding, biking, nature discovery, and all around outside activity you’ll be encouraging! I know other states have annual park passes, and from just a small sample of 1 or 2 states, I found out that the passes are much pricier in other states! Take advantage of this great deal, Washingtonians!

3. Coupon Savings Book

What adventure lover wouldn’t love to save on some of their adventures? Just make sure the person you’re thinking of doesn’t already have one! Every year, we get two books:

Chinook Book: Includes coupons for local restaurants, shops, products, and family fun entertainment (like the zoo and aquarium!). Coupons included are from local companies and businesses that do “good”. You can read all about it on their criteria page. So far, the following cities have a Chinook Book: Denver, Twin Cities, Portland, Seattle & Puget Sound, and San Francisco Bay Area & Santa Cruz.
Entertainment Book: The more well-known of the coupon books, we rely on this for 2 for 1 deals when eating out, saving on rental cars and hotels, and great 2 for 1 deals at museums and parks. Books are available in almost every state in the U.S. & are also available in 7 Canadian provinces.

4. Built Origami Wine Tote

I came upon this awesome little holder as I was figuring out gift ideas for my mom! She was looking for a good way to bring wine to parties and gatherings. I had never heard of such a thing, but thanks to some searching around in some local kitchen shops, I found the perfect wine transporter. The origami folds protect the bottle of wine, and the whole thing folds down flat for easy packing. Great to bring along in the suitcase if you think you’ll want to bring wine back from your destination too.

5. Travel Booster

Bergen was given the booster pictured on the right (fisher-price) as a gift when he was just a wee baby, and we use it often. It goes with us on road trips, picnics, parks, and friend’s houses. It’s easy to clean, and folds up for handy transport. I’ve also had my eye on the brica version (right) since it would easily fit in a suitcase for plane travel.

6. Sound Spa

You can give the gift of peaceful sleep. The sounds that come out of this machine induce a good night sleep. The pleasant sounds can also block out some not-so-pleasant sounds (or sounds you just aren’t used to) heard when traveling. A sound spa is also helpful when the little ones are sleeping, and parents are still up. Parents don’t have to worry as much about the slightest noise waking up the kids.

7. L.L.Bean Tote Bag

Such a handy tote for travel and just everyday outings. We put all of Bergen’s special plane toys in the bag, and then it fits nicely into our carry-on backpack. It’s also great for toys in the car, and can just be thrown in the backseat. We love the monogram option. When we go to activities around town like the Y, we don’t have to worry about getting bags mixed up, and teachers/helpers know where to find Bergen’s stuff!

8. Rain Suit

A must here in the Pacific Northwest, but handy anywhere it might rain. I love how we can just throw the rain suit on over Bergen’s regular clothes, and not worry about him getting sopping wet. Outside play is so much more relaxing! It also folds up small making it easy to stuff into the diaper bag without taking up too much room. The suit pictured here is from a local company out of Vancouver, Washington (Oakiwear), and is on sale right now for just over $30. Rain suits are also great for hanging out on the boat in colder weather!

9. Travel Bucket

Most recently, we took this “scrunch bucket” along with us on our trip to Kauai, but it’s gone on road trips to the lake, to the pool, and is just fun to have around the house for the bath and backyard. As the name implies it scrunches up so you can stuff into your suitcase. It’s also super light. Pack it with some fun water or beach toys, and you’ve got the perfect gift for a young adventurer!

10. Portable Speaker

Adventurers can bring their tunes along no matter the destination. We have a similar product, the Memorex Portable Travel Speaker, but if I could go back on my purchase, I’d definitely go with the candy-bar speaker pictured. I like that you don’t have to dock your ipod or iphone, and the smaller size can’t be beat. Can you picture a fun impromptu dance party at the beach, park, rental house…?

Playdate with Dad: Seattle’s International Children’s Park

While I put my eyes through the ringer at the eye doctor, Bergen and his Dad got to spend a beautiful afternoon toddling around Seattle’s Chinatown/International District. Much to our surprise, Bergen sometimes insists on walking these days. We don’t get very far, very fast, but at least he’s learned how to wear himself out.

One of the highlights of their adventure was the International Children’s Park. The park has been around since the early 1980’s, but was recently redesigned and renovated to improve visibility, safety, and just generally bring the park up-to-date.

A visit here would be a great addition to any International District outing. Uwajimaya’s (our Pacific Northwest Asian Grocery store chain) Seattle location is located just 2 blocks North, the Wing Luke Museum is 2 blocks East, and there are countless restaurants to enjoy delicious Asian cuisine.

It seemed to be a perfect little park for Bergen. Great for wandering around, and good opportunities for climbing. Slaed thought the best feature was the drums of various sizes and colors just outside the play structure area.

In addition to the dragon sculpture (pictured below) that was kept from the original park design, three more art pieces, created by Stuart Nakamura and inspired by the neighborhood’s culture and community, were installed: a bronze ball, mosaic top, and metal coin.

Seward Park’s Tales and Trails

Soon after Bergen’s first birthday this past summer, we took advantage of a warm, sunny day, and his new status as a “one- year old”, and tried out the Tales and Trails program at Seward Park’s Environmental and Audubon Center. The center provides a program specifically geared towards young toddlers (ages 1-3 years).

Our experience began with a welcome from the friendly guide. She read stories featuring aspects of nature that we might see on our upcoming hike. She allowed the tots to explore with found nests, and lifelike stuffed animals including birds, turtles, and other woodland creatures.

Next we hit the trail just outside the Audubon Center, and hiked (s-l-o-w-l-y, think, toddler pace) in search of “animals”. The guide uncovered various logs and rocks to reveal insects of all kinds, and we also kept our eye out for spider webs. Some of the webs she sprayed lightly with water for the little ones to catch a better glimpse.

Our short journey ended in a wide open meadow. The guide whipped her net through the tall grass a few times, laid out a white sheet, and emptied the net. Tons of tiny creatures magically appeared, and the kids used special bug houses with magnifiers to study each and every one. At this point, Slaed was taking notes, and asking questions! He did not want to forget this special trick. It was amazing how many insects she was able to capture in just a few swipes of the net. She said the key to the whole thing is the white sheet.

In retrospect, Bergen may have been a little too young to really take full advantage of the activities. There were other “babies”, but they were accompanied by their older sibling. It was hard to keep his attention during the classroom/storytelling portion even though the guide was very engaging. He was much more interested in tearing down the library of books. However, we do not at all regret taking him. We learned a lot ourselves (like the net & sheet trick), and enjoyed watching the other kids at different stages of toddlerdom. It was interesting to see how they reacted to the activities. We’re constantly amazed at how fast they change, from month to month even!

Bergen also got to be outside in the thick of things, which more and more we’re thinking is at the top of his list of things he loves to do, aside from eating, of course.

  - The hike was slow and leisurely enough for us to just carry Bergen though I also had the ergo just in case. Strollers would not have worked on the trail we went on, but are perfect for the 2.4 mile loop around the park!

Next Running Adventure: Seattle Half Marathon

For the first time in 5 years, we are NOT traveling for Thanksgiving. With our Kauai trip coming up next week, and a trip to California for Christmas, and even more trips planned for 2013, adding a Thanksgiving trip would just be too much for our little family.

So instead of taking on the challenges of the airports and roadways, I’m relying on my own two feet, and running another half marathon: The Seattle Half Marathon on November 25th. This will be my fourth half marathon, so I’m feeling good about the race, however I’m nervous because this will be the latest I’ve ever planned to run. I decided to sign up just 6 weeks out instead of my usual 12 (or more) weeks. I ran the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon in late June, and have continued to walk, run, hike, and even bike throughout the summer and fall, but until a couple of weeks ago, I hadn’t stuck to a strict plan.

After running 8 miles last Sunday, and yesterday as my long runs for the week, I’m more confident though, and looking forward to the challenge of 13.1!

I also feel lucky to be training in such a beautiful fall environment. I end up doing many of my long runs along Lake Washington Boulevard because of it’s proximity to my house. Plus, it’s an easy, flat trail with plenty of other runners and cyclists to keep me company and motivate me. No interruptions (i.e. stoplights or big, busy intersections to cross) either.

5 Reasons to Love Seattle’s Washington Park Arborteum this Fall

As you might already know, we’re frequenters of the Washington Park Arboretum. We’re lucky that this 230 acre park is practically in our backyard. With so many visits you’d think we would be sick of going, but instead we’re just finding more reasons to appreciate the place. Every season brings something unique and special, but here’s what we’re loving this fall:

1. The Fall Colors

The oranges, yellows, and reds are here. Against the evergreen trees, the colors just pop.

2. The Sounds of Fall.

This month brings a special art installation to the Arboretum called Paths II: The Music of Trees. There are 7 sites each with it’s own unique soundtrack to listen to via a speaker high above. Take a look and listen at Site 5. The sound you’ll hear (aside from crows, camera noise, and an airplane) is actually the feet of flies flittering about on a special microphone that picks up sound by touch!

3. The Fall Weather.

Sure, the rains have returned, but we’ve also had some gorgeous sunshiny crisp weather creating the perfect conditions for hiking the trails of the arboretum.

Celebrating Fall WITH Pumpkins at Fall City Farms

You might have heard about our trip to the farm last week that ended without pumpkins going home with us. The farm we visited didn’t have a patch, so we oped to venture to another farm on the Western side of the Cascades a couple of days later.

I decided to make this another “naptime roadtrip“, so while Bergen snoozed away in the backseat on the way to the farm, I enjoyed the fall colors that have popped up here in the Seattle area. I even extended the drive since we arrived earlier than expected, allowing me to take in more oranges, reds, and yellows lining the country roads, and for Bergen to get a little more rest.

Since we were visiting on a weekday, some of the bigger happenings, like concerts and hayrides, were not going on. However, that also meant we were some of the only folks around, which was just fine by me as it was just the two of us for this adventure.

First up was a visit with all the animals that call the farm home. This time we saw, turkeys, goats, and (especially vocal) cows. The turkeys were particularly curious of Bergen!

On to the main event, we went in search of three pumpkins. As you can see, this farm had the patch I was looking for with pumpkin after pumpkin in all stages of color nestled among brittle vines and leaves. Bergen is on his way to becoming a walker, but still chose crawling as his mode of transportation to explore.

Learning our Limits at Seattle’s Discovery Park

When an outing with your little one goes well, you feel like a rock star. You’re thinking, I know my kid, I planned everything perfectly, I did everything right. Even if maybe you didn’t put that much thought or planning into it at all. On the other hand, when an outing goes wrong or you have a few hiccups, you can feel like a complete failure. You’re thinking, I don’t know my kid, I didn’t plan anything right, what was I thinking?

We’ve had some less than rock star outings, where Bergen has been too tired, too hungry, or just too darn uncomfortable for things to go well. Sure we could have planned for a better outcome, but sometimes things just happen. Most importantly, we don’t let the “failures” stop us from leaving the house again because the more we do venture out, the more we learn about what’s best for our family.

This past weekend, our trip to Discovery Park in the Magnolia neighborhood of Seattle was a little bit of both. We did a lot of things right, and a few things wrong. We’ll start with some of our missteps so that we can end on a good note.

The Bad

Based on our starting time in the late afternoon, we hiked for too long. We could have stuck to the Loop Trail even with our addition of the South Beach Trail to the lighthouse, and been fine. We were over adventurous, and also added the Hidden Valley Trail. Too much.
Bergen never got a break. When we realized, he probably needed a chance to stretch and get out of the carrier, it was too late. There is in fact a playground at Discovery Park, and we should have incorporated a stop there into our hike.
Again because of our late afternoon start time, and too long of a hike, we were getting dangerously close to dinner time. Not a good thing for a growing boy whose number one pastime is eating.

The Good

We did our best to provide ideal circumstances for the outing. We left for our hike right after Bergen’s nap (and snack, of course).
We had perfect hiking weather. I know we didn’t have anything to do with the weather, but at least we planned something to do! We had clear skies, and cool temperatures. Not too hot, not too cold.
Before we left the car in the parking lot, I stashed a fruit bar in the ergo, just in case. This little snack saved us as we scrambled through the forest when Bergen was more than finished with hiking.
At the last stretch, I moved the hood to my sweatshirt. Who knew this would ensue the biggest laughing fit in history? It must have looked like a puppet to Bergen because he was absolutely beside himself thinking my hood was the most hilarious thing in the world. I flung the drawstring of the hood back for him to gnaw on, and that was the icing on the cake. We made it back to the parking lot without anymore fusses or cries. You just never know.

Escape to Seattle’s Waterfall Garden Park

Among the concrete, muck, and history in downtown Seattle’s Pioneer Square is a mini getaway. A calm, peaceful place to escape. You probably wouldn’t just stumble upon this hidden park. You’d need to know what you were looking for, but once you go for the first time, my guess is that you’ll want to come back again and again.

Bergen loves water. He’s intrigued by the falling streams, the sound, the light reflecting in the droplets, all of it, except of course the cold he feels after getting wet. He’d be happy in the bathtub with the faucet turned on, but I thought taking him the Seattle’s Waterfall Garden Park would be a little bit more fun for the both of us.

The United Parcel Service’s original office was located here, and in 1967, the Waterfall Park was created, and given as a gift to the City of Seattle. I think Seattle is pretty thankful for a beautiful place to sip a cup of coffee, enjoy a picnic lunch, or just entertain a little toddler.

Open daily from 8:00 am to 3:45 pm. These are “winter hours” so if you are visiting at a different time of year, they may be extended.
Bistro tables and chairs are available, and an attendant is present at all times.

Seattle’s Volunteer Park Dahlia Garden

Here in Seattle we really can’t believe it’s fall. I keep waiting for things to change (and the rains to come), but here we are again with sunny skies, and 70 degree temperatures. I’m honestly worried. Am I overreacting? Nevertheless, we are certainly enjoying ourselves.

Our parks are still hanging on to summer as well. Just a few days ago on one of our afternoon walks, we visited Volunteer Park in the Capitol Hill neighborhood (just East of Downtown). We love Volunteer Park for it’s beautiful conservatory, water tower giving you unique views of the city, and wide open space. New to me this summer is Volunteer Park’s Dahlia Garden. The Dahlia Garden has been around for many years though, and given the fact that dahlias just happen to be my most favorite flower, I can’t believe I’ve missed the garden all this time! Where have I been? Why hadn’t anyone told me about it?

So many colors, shapes, sizes, and styles are represented in this modest garden located across from the conservatory and in front of the rhododendrons. I could have stayed for hours inspecting each and everyone. Lucky for Slaed and Bergen, who were not so fascinated, there is a playground hidden among the trees just a short distance away. So when they were bored of looking at flowers, they escaped to slide, swing, and climb. Norman and I were left alone to admire.

The Volunteer Park Dahlia Garden is located in Volunteer Park (near the conservatory), and maintained by the Puget Sound Dahlia Association.

- Hours: 6 am-10pm
The dahlias are planted every May, and dug up the following October. Peak viewing is in the month of August, though the season is July-September.
A visit to Volunteer Park makes a great outing. Some of the other features include, the Seattle Asian Art Museum (SAAM), the water tower, wading pool, playground, and conservatory.

Downtown Seattle with a Toddler: 10 Great Destinations

When in Downtown Seattle whether you are a visitor of the city or a resident looking to enjoy some time with your family, there is plenty to do to keep everyone happy, beyond just the playgrounds and children’s museums (though those have their place too). Without leaving the downtown core, Seattle has destinations that older babies and toddlers will find fascinating while keeping parents engaged and entertained too!

1. Pike Place Market

Best visited during off peak times so that wandering toddlers are not misplaced, you and your little one will love exploring our year-round public market. Watch the fish fly at the Pike Place Fish Market, visit Rachel the Pig, listen to talented and entertaining musicians found throughout the area, and make sure to grab some of the world famous Macaroni and Cheese at Beechers. We also never leave the market without at least a half dozen of delicious mini-doughnuts from the Daily Dozen Doughnut Company.

2. The Seattle Aquarium

While it might seem like a splurge, the Seattle Aquarium located on Seattle’s Waterfront has a lot to offer both kids and parents, and if you truly are traveling with a toddler (from 0-3 years), they’ll get in for free. Bergen loves watching animals, and fish and water really seem to captivate him.

3. The Monorail

Hop on the Monorail at Westlake Center, and for $2.25 you can enjoy a ride to the only other stop: Seattle Center in the “Lower Queen Anne” neighborhood. Along the way you’ll see beautiful views of the city skyline from thirty feet above the street level. Riding the monorail is fun, and it’s a cheaper, faster alternative to taking a taxi or walking.

4. Seattle Center

Once you arrive via the monorail, there are so many choices at Seattle Center. For a free adventure, visit the International Fountain, and watch the choreographed water spraying performance. In hot (or even mildly warm) weather, kids and adults flock here to get a little wild and crazy, and cool off. At this point, Bergen just loves the surprise element of not knowing when each “super shooter” will spray. For hungry visitors, check out the newly renovated “Center House” for it’s many local and casual dining options. Just some of the other destinations include: The Space Needle, Pacific Science Center, Experience Music Project, Seattle Children’s Museum, and the brand new Chihuly Garden and Glass.

5. Seattle’s Central Library

Libraries aren’t just for checking-out books. Rebuilt and opened in 2004, Downtown Seattle’s Central Library is an architectural masterpiece with11 floors, a “Book Spiral”, and amazing views of the Puget Sound from the top floor reading room. Once you have the chance to explore the design and unique elements of the building, take your little one to the children’s section to enjoy the play area, use the computers, and most importantly, cozy up with a good book. Room for strollers and family restrooms are also available.

6. The Lightrail

For this next public transportation experience, you’ll head underground to ride our recently established Link Lightrail System. If you’re using a stroller to tote your tot around, you’ll find it easy to roll off and on the trains. Currently, the lightrail goes as far North as Westlake Center in Downtown Seattle and as far South as the Seatac Airport.

7. Pioneer Square

Ride the lightrail just a few stops to Pioneer Square, the birthplace of Seattle. Visit the Smith Tower, which was the tallest building West of the Mississippi in it’s completion in 1914, run around Occidental Park and climb on the firefighters memorial. Then have cup of coffee or a picnic at the Waterfall Garden Park (between S 2nd Avenue Extended & Main St) and watch your tot become mesmerized while you relax. A visit to Magic Mouse Toys on 1st Avenue will also be a lot of fun for all.

8. The Olympic Sculpture Park

A perfect place for little ones to burn off some energy while parents explore over twenty beautiful and interesting sculptures. The park is located at the Northwest edge of Downtown Seattle, and boasts gorgeous views of Elliott Bay and of course, the Olympic Mountains.

9. The South Lake Union Streetcar

One last public mode of transportation takes you (appropriately) on the street level. Ride the car from the Westlake Hub to Lake Union Park. Kids under 5 ride free, and they’ll love watching the world go by as they move along in the streetcar without their carseat.

10. South Lake Union

Explore the Center for Wooden Boats, Museum of History and Industry, and celebrate Seattle’s maritime history. There’s plenty of green space for kids to spread their wings, fun trails, a splash fountain, and a tempting footbridge. Go on a scavenger hunt for a pirate ship, dragon boat, seaplane, kayak, and any other lake related item you can think of! Then hop back on the streetcar to get back downtown.

Wild Sightings: Washington Park Arboretum

There we were on one of our usual walks in the Washington Park Arboretum catching up on the days activities. Bergen babbling away in his stroller. Norman wishing he was off his leash chasing the squirrels scurrying about in the grass and trees.

All of a sudden, we were stopped in our tracks.

We listened for several minutes trying to locate where the sound was coming from.

Once we were able to hone in on one particular tree, we inspected each and every branch and limb until finally…I spotted the creature who was talking to us!

The owl stayed very still, high up in the tree allowing us to watch in awe, and even allowed us to point out our discovery to others passing by on their walk. I’ve seen an owl once before, but this was Slaed’s first “owl in the wild” spotting. Not such a usual day after all.

An Afternoon at the Fair: Baby’s Top 5

Last year at less than a month old, Bergen missed the Puyallup Fair, our Western Washington State fair held every September. Even for us, that would have been a little too adventurous. So as the fair rolled around again this year, we were more than ready to check it out with the little guy.

In order to avoid the weekend crowds, Slaed went to work even earlier than usual so he could leave earlier and we could get a head start on the trip down. We timed Bergen’s nap to coincide with the drive, and took a longer route to buy him some more time.

While the fair is a whole different experience with a baby in tow, we still managed to introduce Bergen to almost all of our favorite fair amusements. He was quite content with just about everything, but there were some that really stood out.

5. Ride Watching. The lights, the music, the movement. Bergen isn’t a fan of just standing around so I was surprised at how content he was as we waited for Slaed to ride the roller coaster. Then I realized that he was totally mesmerized by the overload of sensory stimulation.

4. Looking through cut-outs. Who knew this could be so much fun for a baby? Bergen just loved looking through and waving to the people he saw “on the other side”. And to think we actually hesitated to get him out of the ergo for this!

3. Checking out the animals. This one’s a no-brainer. Ducks and goats seemed to be favorites, but we saw it all: pigs & piglets, chickens, horses, cows, rabbits, dogs, and even pigeons.

2. People Watching. Bergen has a reputation of being a “noisy-rosy” & a “rubber-necker”, and these traits were out in full force at the fair. Endless interesting people to look at everywhere we went!

1. Taking in all in on the Sky Ride. Manufactured in Switzerland, and originally installed at the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair, this piece of history took us up a whopping 55 feet in the air for a bird’s eye view of all the action! Believe it or not, this was the only ride Bergen was allowed on, so we rode it twice: once at the beginning of the afternoon, once at the end. We thought for sure he’d be able to get on the carousel. No luck, but that was just fine with him.

The Puyallup Fair (September 7-23 ’12) is located in Puyallup, Washington, about 40 minutes South of Seattle.
We drove so that Bergen could nap in the car, but our friends offered a great tip of taking the Sounder Train to avoid traffic & parking hassles. More info on alternative transportation here.
We used the ergo to transport Bergen around, but many were navigating the fair with strollers easily.
It’s a good idea to check exhibit schedules before you go (or talk about what you’ll see with the kids) to avoid disappointment as certain barns can be closed.
