I have to admit, I was a little skeptical and had to be talked into signing up for the Seattle Brunch Run this past weekend. It’s been a while since I’ve participated in a formal running event, and the price tag had me hesitant. The organizers, Seattle Magazine, claimed there would be inclusive brunch bites from more than 15 local restaurants along with a boozy brunch garden featuring mimosas, bloody marys, and beer.
But would it really be more than just a few bites and tastes?
I wondered.
I’d also been warned about the long lines. And popular items running out before all participants had a chance to indulge.
On top of that, along with not participating in a formal running event, I hadn’t really participated in any running, other than picking up the pace on our walks to make sure I reached Bergen’s school for dismissal time. Walking long distances. Yes. Hiking. Yes. Even bike riding! Not a lot of running under my belt though in last few months, errr…year, or longer.
And finally, let’s talk about the forecast. There was solid rain scheduled. Hours and hours of non-stop precipitation. Listening to the showers outside my window as I woke up had me wishing for a way out! Not exactly the best welcome back into my long lost sport of running.
I’m happy to report however, that despite my doubts, and admitted bad attitude, I’m thanking and praising my friends for pushing me to sign up with them!
Right on schedule, the rain let up as soon as we all shuffled out to the starting line. The sun even made an appearance. My friend and I kept a leisurely pace, chatting and catching up, and I was actually surprised when we reached the finish line. It seemed to come so quick!
The Seattle Brunch Run won me over. Here’s a little bit more on what I loved…
Beautiful Course
The 5K course, all on trails, had us winding through Seattle’s Magnuson Park. Even with the overcast skies, I kept remarking about the lovely views and scenery. A heron even fly by at one point, and settled into a nearby wetland to fish. We had a fairly easy time running the gravel paths. While there was not a lot of uphill, of course given the weather conditions and the fact that we’re in Seattle, there were plenty of puddles and muddy spots.
Organization and Support
I was impressed with the amount of folks guiding us and even cheering us on every step of the way from check-in to departure. There was even a fitness instructor who led us in warm-ups and stretches before the race began! Such a great way to get our blood pumping, and ready for a strong race.
The Brunch!
Much to my delight, every single offering that I tried was delicious. We even went back for seconds on some options. From quiche to scones, biscuits and gravy, yogurt, and of course refreshing mimosas, my friends, and I seriously indulged. My favorite bite was the breakfast burrito from Jack’s Barbecue. It reminded me that my family and I need to return!
Yes, for the popular items (drinks, biscuits, & bagels) there were long lines, but the queue actually went quickly, and it gave us a chance to eat and drink what we’d already gathered. Plus, portions were generous! It was almost disappointing to be full before getting to try everything.
It’s settled. I’ll definitely be participating in more Brunch runs in the years to come! Have you run a 5K (or other race) lately? We’d love to hear about it!
