We are in a funky transition now that Georgia has graduated from a crib to a toddler bed. Our kids are used to sleeping in their own rooms at home, which works out very well for us. However, when we travel, we are often not blessed with tons of space. With Georgia in the travel crib, we could stick her in a spare bathroom, a walk-in closet, or even create a private space with a sheet and clothes line or bungee cord.
Now that she’s not a baby anymore, these make shift spaces are a little trickier. Recently, a small child-sized cot (called the Regalo My Cot Portable Toddler Bed) came up for sale on one of our local parenting networks. Since it wasn’t a huge investment, we thought we’d give it a try. Set-up looked simple, and we also knew it would be easy to store and, weighing just 4 pounds, pack for road trips.
Georgia got to give the cot a try for the first time on our recent road trip through central and eastern Washington. Originally our trip was only going to be to Walla Walla, but at the last minute we added on a 1-night stop at Cave B Inn (near the Gorge Amphitheater). Walla Walla was feeling like a long drive just for 2 nights, and since the kids were on spring break, we had some flexibility.
We typically try to reserve hotel rooms with some sort of separation (suites, bedrooms, adjoining rooms, etc), but with Cave B already being a splurge, we had to get creative with a room with 2-queen beds. Instead of putting the kids together in one bed, Bergen got one of the queens to himself, and Georgia slept on the cot in her own little private corner of the room.
Even though it was chilly, Slaed and I retreated to the balcony, enjoyed a glass of wine and the view, and the kids eventually (Georgia especially loves chatting, giggling, and singing with her big brother), dozed off into dreamland.
To our delight, Georgia slept so well! She was cozy and comfortable, and loved having a space just for herself. We are grateful to now have this sleeping option, at least during the preschool years. The cot will come in handy for future roadtrips, I don’t think we’d ever pack it for a flight, and even for an additional sleep space at home when guests visit.
The structure of the cot reminds us of a portable/fold-up chair, similar to those used for camping, sideline sitting, concerts, etc, and it comes with a removable sheet and carry bag.
