Camping with Kids at Washington’s Scenic Beach State Park

If you’d asked me on the first evening of our 3-night camping trip at Scenic Beach State Park if I’d go camping with my children again, I would have answered with a definitive, NO. A couple of quick (and vulnerable) excerpts from my journal:

“I’m not that enthusiastic about camping. The kids drive me crazy. The absence of routine things makes me realize what I take for granted.”

“Everything makes me anxious—Georgia humming as I wait for her to fall asleep. Slaed breaking apart boxes and throwing pieces into the fire. He’s making noise and I fear it’ll keep the kids up.

4th of July 2018 Celebration: Red, White, and Bothell & Beyond!

We celebrated America’s independence this past week, and had such a fun family day. Looking back on our 4th of Julys as a family, it’s about 50/50 between traveling and staying in town. I can’t say I have a preference. Of course, we are always up for a travel adventure, but staying off the roads and out of airports on a holiday is definitely a positive!

There’s something special about small town festivities on the 4th of July. Slaed’s mom grew in Bothell, Washington (about 30 minutes north of downtown Seattle), so we get that sweet feeling of almost coming home when we visit. This year in addition to attending Bothell’s Grand Parade, we made a day of it, and spent time at McMenamins Anderson School.

Kicking Back with Girlfriends in La Conner, Washington + 4 Tips for a Relaxing Getaway

As a family travel advocate, most of our adventures happen with our wild and wonderful children. From time to time though, we enjoy (and recommend) taking a break from full time caregiving for a bit!

I’m happy to report that my girlfriends and I just recently returned from our 3rd annual Mom’s Weekend. We’ve been friends since our now 3.5 year olds were newborns, and treasure this special time to get away. This year we traveled to La Conner, Washington for the 2nd time, renting an amazing home that worked out so perfectly last year, we decided to return. La Conner is about 60 miles north of Seattle, located in Skagit Valley, well known for it’s Tulip Festival each spring.

You’ll find a variety of options for eating out from casual cafes, a bustling pizza joint, fancier (but kid-friendly) restaurants, and even an amazing option inside a gas station convenience store! Since Walla Walla is located in such a rich agricultural area, visitors truly get a taste of the region. Many restaurants have direct connections with local farms, and as I mentioned in Part 1, Walla Walla is one of the friendliest towns in the United States! You’ll be treated well in both food and hospitality.

How to Add Fun to an Outdoor Adventure with Walkie Talkies

Looking to add a some oomph to your outdoor adventures? Are your kids (or even you!) a little reluctant to venture outdoors? Technology can be a great bridge between the comfort of home, and the unknown or hesitation of getting outside.

Bergen recently received 2 sets of walkie talkies as gifts, and we have found that (when powered amply) they really add a lot of fun and excitement to our hikes and other outdoor adventures. As we’ve brought them along, various games, uses, and benefits, along with a few operating tips, have emerged.

While one game (see below) naturally came out during our “research”, you’ll see that generally we just found a lot of practical and even educational uses for the walkie talkies.

Walla Walla, Washington with Kids: Family Travel Guide

A popular wine tasting destination may not seem like the best choice for a family getaway. However, we had the pleasure of learning that Walla Walla, Washington is indeed a fantastic place to visit with kids. Slaed and I hadn’t visited since before we were even married, so we were excited to see the small town located in Southeast Washington State (about 4.5 hours from Seattle) through the fresh eyes of our children.
