Exploring the Outer Banks: Duck, North Carolina with Kids

Duck, North Carolina is the third leg in our four part Eastern North Carolina! Though, the kids enjoyed all of our road trip destinations, Duck was their favorite.  The reason? COUSINS! Yes, we meet up with my brother, sister, and their respective families each summer for a week or so of beach fun.

In conjunction with our family’s annual trip to North Carolina’s Outer Banks each summer, this year we decided to create more of a road trip. Rather than just visit my family’s beach cottage in Duck, North Carolina, we added stops in Kinston, NC, Ocracoke, NC, and Raleigh, NC.

Ocracoke Island, North Carolina with Kids (+Video)

Next up on our North Carolina road trip series is Ocracoke Island!  I grew up going to Ocracoke for day trips from our family’s beach house in the Duck, NC.  As Slaed would hear my siblings and I talk about the uniqueness and quirkiness (and beauty!) of the island, he wanted to make sure we added Ocracoke to one of our annual trips to the Outer Banks.

Snoqualmie Valley Trail: Bike Riding with Kids in Carnation and Duvall, WA

Did you and your family go on any outdoor adventures this past weekend? My family and I rode about 20 miles on the Snoqualmie Valley Trail.  The Snoqualmie Valley Trail is an old railroad grade trail located about 25 miles east of Seattle.  The end points of the trail are in Duvall, Washington (McCormick Park), and near North Bend, WA (Rattlesnake Lake Recreation Area).

In total, the trail is 31.5 miles.  Maybe someday we’ll make the entire journey.  For our first adventure though, we stuck to the nice flat section between Carnation and Duvall.

Carnation is a special place for our family.  We first started coming out the small farming town because it was where we boarded our dog, Norman.  Thanks to our frequent visits, yes we travel a lot, we have gotten to know the area well.  Incidentally, we also recommend visiting for pumpkins, berry picking, farm to table experiences, camping, and just generally enjoying the beauty of Western Washington!

How to Investigate a Nurse Log with Kids: Think Outside Boxes Nature Box

The kids and I investigate nurse logs, fallen trees that decay and become habitats, often.  In fact there is one that we visit on a regular basis since it is just steps away from Georgia’s forest school.  Whenever we are a few minutes early, we walk over to see what might be happening that day.

I love watching the surroundings and contents change through the seasons.  As we visit in summer, it’s hard to even get to the log because of all the growth happening around it! Nurse logs are a big part of our nature exploration.  BUT, our latest (and final) Think Outside Box brought our investigating to whole new level.

The Think Outside Nature box provides kids with tools and information to learn about ecosystems, plants, and all kinds of wildlife while making safe choices.  Thanks to detailed instructions (complete with photos) in the activity guide, we not only had a fun outing in nature, but we saw a ton more than we usually would!

How to Create a Solar Oven with Kids: Think Outside Boxes Nutrition Box!

A few summers ago, Bergen got to help create and cook using a solar oven at forest school.  Ever since then, I’ve been curious about the process, and whether or not we could make one work!

To my excitement, Think Outside Boxes made it happen last month with their Nutrition Box.  The box provided everything we needed to make a solar oven, WITH the actual Think Outside Box.  Genius, right? And, the a perfect activity to do on our recent camping trip.
