How many capital cities have you explored? We were able to add one more capital city to our growing list, Raleigh, thanks to our recent North Carolina road trip! Usually when traveling to the NC’s Outer Banks, we fly in and out of Raleigh, and only visit the airport. For this trip, though we set some time aside, about 24 hours, so that we could explore the city a bit.
In conjunction with our family’s annual trip to North Carolina’s Outer Banks each summer, this year we decided to create more of a road trip. Rather than just visit my family’s beach cottage in Duck, North Carolina, we added stops in Kinston, NC, Ocracoke, NC, and Raleigh, NC.
In a series here on the blog, and on our YouTube channel, I will share the highlights of our experience! You can expect information on lodging, dining, and family friendly experiences in each location.
After packing up from our visit to Duck, North Carolina, we took our time traveling to Raleigh knowing that we could check in to our hotel just in time to put Georgia down for a nap. We stopped for breakfast, and a quick visit to Jeannette’s Pier in Nags Head, explored Manteo for a bit, and even caught a drag boat race in Plymouth.
Once in Raleigh, while I planned our afternoon adventure, Georgia napped, and Slaed and Bergen enjoyed themselves in the hotel pool. We packed a lot in to our roughly 24 hour visit with our usual focus of finding activities, restaurants, and experiences that will please both kids, AND adults.
Join us on our adventure in Raleigh, NC by playing the video below!
Raleigh, NC Highlights:
- Pullen Park (playground, train, water features, and more in this city park)
- Crank Arm Brewing (bicycle-themed family friendly brewery)
- Beasley’s Chicken & Honey (southern fried chicken, and scrumptious in-season sides)
- Homewood Suites Crabtree Valley/Raleigh (our favorite hotel chain for it’s specious rooms, and delicious breakfast)
- North Carolina State Capitol (free self-guided tours, great for families with kids of all ages)
- North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences (free, and enjoyable for the whole family)
- Chuck’s (burgers, fries (and tots!), shakes)
That’s a wrap for our North Carolina road trip! Make sure you check out our previous three legs of the adventure: Kinston, Ocracoke, and Duck. If you have visited (or live in) North Carolina we would love your input in where we should visit next.

I had been on East coast few years back and passed through North Carolina several times but did not get opportunity to stop and explore. Adding Raleigh to my travel list. Thanks for sharing.
