While we’ve been sharing our monthly Think Outside Boxes unboxing on instagram and YouTube, it’s been a while since we’ve talked about the subscription service here on the blog!

Last fall we gave an overview of Think Outside Boxes‘ Intro or “First Box”, and then shared the first box in the fall rotation: Night! Before we continue sharing the 5 boxes that have followed, here’s a quick recap of what Think Outside Boxes is all about:

Think Outside Boxes is a year-long monthly subscription service that’s geared towards kids 7 and up! Each month, subscribers receive a box in the mail based around a theme. As I mentioned above, the service begins with an introductory box that includes a backpack (color of your child’s choice), and some other small goodies to encourage outdoor exploration.  The boxes that follow depend on when the subscription is initiated. So far, we’ve received SIX boxes.  For those we have received, I’ve linked to their corresponding post/YouTube video, so go check them out!

Spring Boxes: Shelter, First Aid & Weather

Summer Boxes:  Navigation, Nutrition & Nature

Fall Boxes: Night, Water & Fire

Winter Boxes: Wildlife, Repair & Knot

Each box includes up to 5 pieces of outdoor gear, an activity book, and a set of waterproof reference cards that goes along with the month’s theme.

We are so grateful for Think Outside Boxes:

• Just as the name of the program implies, the monthly boxes are getting us to “think outside the box” when it comes to our outdoor activity! We already spend a lot of time outdoors, but the monthly challenges and activity suggestions are getting us out of our comfort zone and routine.  We’re being more creative and trying new things!
• The kids and I are learning important skills and lessons.  For example, thanks to the FIRE box, we created a formal fire escape plan for our family.
• The kids are encouraged to take up new hobbies! Fishing, knot tying, astronomy, and wildlife viewing are just a few of the activities my children have taken more of an interest in thanks to Think Outside Boxes!
•  We are building a solid outdoor gear stash! From para-cord to binoculars, and from flashlights to sewing kits, we have tools and resources to help us and encourage us to explore more in the outdoors.
• Think Outside Boxes is not just about getting outside and having fun, though of course, that is extremely important! The service reaches beyond just play and exploration, and encourages families to think about others through their “Live it/Empathy” section.  Just this month, we learned several tips on how to help someone with anxiety.
