Over the years, we have created many fun DIY Valentine’s Day gifts for the kids to pass out to their classmates. Since we are a nature-loving family, I love to put an outdoor spin on the Valentine’s Day gift!
One of our favorite projects is the heart-shaped homemade bird feeder. Because they are so simple to make, with just a few steps, it’s an easy craft for a parent and child team.
DIY Valentine’s Day Bird Feeders
- Measure a little over half a cup of water, and bring to a boil.
- After the water comes to a slow boil, add two packets of plain gelatin.
- Stir until the gelatin is dissolved. It may clump at first, but be patient. It will take several minutes! Once mostly dissolved, let the mixture cool for about 1 minute.
- Take the mixture off the stove, and slowly add 2 cups of bird seed. Stir until well coated.
- Distribute bird seed mixture into heart molds! Use wet finger tips (less bird seed will stick to your hands), and press down into molds evenly.
- Poke holes into the top of each heart with a straw or pencil (this will be for putting string or yarn through for hanging).
- Let your bird seed hearts dry for at least 2 hours. Once they are dry, add your yarn or string for hanging!
- Bonus step: Add to a bag with a sweet Valentine’s Day note!
