Before welcoming our newest family member into the world, we had one last travel adventure as a family of three. It was important to use to spend some quality time together just before our lives turned upside down with new routines, a new normal, and new responsibilities.
Some time away brought a chance to bond and strengthen our unit, which inevitably brought along a lot of refection as well as anticipation.
What will one more member do to our dynamic?
Surely it could only get better.
Wallace Falls State Park is one of the busier state parks in Washington. Even in late November on a cold and rainy day, while the parking lot wasn’t packed (as in summer), there were more fellow hikers and campers than you might expect for such conditions.
After arriving, checking in to our cabin, unpacking and then warming up with some epic Pho in the town of Gold Bar (where the park is located), we could delay no longer. We needed to hit the trail despite the fact that the rain just wasn’t letting up.
It rained, poured at times, and I had trouble keeping up with the boys, but none of that mattered. The whole experience mattered:

With daylight at a premium, a tiny trekker by our sides (or usually dawdling behind), and me being 8 months pregnant we decided to call it a day at Lower Falls. We were satisfied with the view, and given the cloudy conditions we really weren’t missing any of the spectacular scenery that’s visible when hiking further up.
Back at the cabin, Slaed got a fire going, and we decided that our best bet for dinner was to have pizza delivered. Cooking in the rain just didn’t seem appealing, and we’d done our research to find a fairly high regarded pizzeria in the area.
I’ll do a full review of the cabins in another post, but in short, they are a great low cost option for campers who want a few creature comforts (heat, beds, shelter) along with the more rustic experience of lodging in a state park. We also hiked here when Bergen (now 3.5 years) was a baby–you can read all about our trek to Lower, Middle AND Upper Falls!
