Soon after booking our trip to Sun Valley, Idaho, we realized we created a bit of a tradition for ourselves. Looking back at our travels, we were going on three years of heading to a winter wonderland destination in January.
January 2019: Denver/Golden Colorado
January 2020: Salt Lake City/Park City, Utah
January 2021: Sun Valley/Ketchum, Idaho
Since we are often escaping the cold and rainy weather with our other travel traditions (Hawaii & Arizona), bundling up and enjoying the snow is something I can accept on our recurring calendar! Also, before I go on about our time in Sun Valley, I wanted two share two good reasons for you to consider doing the same!
- Airline Deals. The Denver trip was planned well in advance, but we decided to visit Salt Lake City at the last minute because of an amazing deal through Alaska airlines. Keep an eye out, be flexible, and a little spontaneous, and you can often take advantage of big savings.
- Less Crowds. Destinations are also often less crowded during this post-holiday time, so you’ll be dealing with fewer lines, less traffic, and generally less competition to do the things you want to do!
We spent 5 nights in the Sun Valley area, staying in a rental house/apartment in Ketchum, Idaho. When we first arrived, the area was in desperate need for snow. They had very limited ski runs open, and had to utilize snowmaking techniques just to keep up with that small operation. Over the course of the next 3 days though, Sun Valley received over FOUR feet of snow!
We were thrilled to get to experience this massive influx, and absolutely made the most of it with Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, and just playing around in the magical powdery white stuff. ‘
