I’m hopping in early with our SPRING BUCKLET LIST, because we are ready! We are ready to say goodbye to snow, and ice, and cold. We are ready to welcome a little color back into our landscape, and can’t wait for the temperatures to warm up…just a bit!
I want to challenge you to do the same. However you feel about the upcoming season change, jot down a quick list of special things you want to do with your family to celebrate spring. I love how this exercise helps with intentionality, and allows us to prioritize our most treasured and valued family activities.
If you aren’t familiar with our seasonal bucket lists, here’s the scoop: Each season, we create a list of about 10 fun adventures or projects that are specific to the season.
We dig through our favorite nature books, think about our favorite happenings of that particular season, and look at our calendars to gather the best things that nature has for us. To learn more, check out our spring, summer, fall & winter bucket lists of past years.
Here’s our 2019 Spring Bucket List in no particular order!
-
Visit Disneyland!
For spring break the whole family will be heading to the happiest place on earth. Disneyland! This will be the first time for us to visit as a family of 4. Slaed and I have been together (and separately), and Slaed and Bergen visited 4 years ago, but this will be Georgia’s first time! We can’t wait.
-
Take us out to the Ball Game
Baseball is a big deal for our family. It’s Bergen’s favorite sport to play, and Slaed’s favorite sport to watch. We have tickets for Mariner’s Opening Day this year, plus several more games throughout the season. Between the Mariners, and Bergen’s Little League team we’ll be at the ballpark a lot this spring.
-
Family Bike Ride
I am thrilled for the weather to warm up a bit so that we can start going on regular family bike rides. Even though Georgia has started riding on her own, she’ll still ride in the Yepp (or trailer) for these longer rides since she’s not quite road ready.
-
Fly a Kite
We found the kite flying idea in the Kid’s Outdoor Adventure Book (they have suggested outdoor activities categorized by season). It can be particularly windy in the spring, so it makes sense that flying a kite would make the list! As soon as I read the suggestion, Bergen started singing, “Let’s go fly a kite, up to the highest height” from Mary Poppins! Turns out his class is performing this song at his school’s spring concert. How perfect!
-
Cherry Blossoms viewing
Cherry Blossoms are one of my favorite parts of Seattle in the spring time. The University of Washington’s quad has one of the most spectacular displays (but it’s most often very crowded). In addition to just admiring neighborhood cherry trees, there are other spots such as the Washington Park Arboretum, and the International District’s Kobe Terrace Park that are also lovely. Doesn’t really matter where we see the cherry blossoms, just that we get the chance to appreciate them!
-
Spring Inspired Bingo
Bergen LOVES bingo, and he was all ears when I read this suggestion also from the Kid’s Outdoor Adventure Book. In short, we’ll design our own spring-themed bingo cards using stickers, drawings, and magazine cut-outs. Then we’ll head outside on a walk, and mark off items as we find them. Very similar to our Spring Scavenger Hunt!
-
Seed Starts
We have green bean and snap pea seeds that need to be planted! We’ll start the seeds in small pots inside, and then as the weather warms, and the plants grow, we’ll transfer them to our small raised bed outside. Georgia also has lettuce seeds that she planted at school that we need to continue to nurture, and eventually transfer outside.
-
Feed the Birds & Start a Bird Sketch Book
On one of our walks this week, we noticed a home that head 5 or so bird feeders hanging from the trees. This attracted a whole host of birds, and got us inspired. We have one bird feeder, but would like to set a goal to be better about actually filling it with seed! Once we attract a few more feather friends to our backyard, Bergen would like to start a special bird sketch book. We’ll see if we can be successful!
-
Neighborhood Trash Pick-ups
Time to get working to beautify our neighborhood and nearby parks! Now that all the snow has thawed, we’ve noticed a huge increase in trash along our sidewalks, city staircases, and curb sides. We need to do our part, and bring along trash bags, gloves, and our trash picker when we go on our afternoon walks.
-
Waterfall Hike
There are several trails to waterfalls that I’d love for Georgia to hike on her own. She’s hiked to Coal Creek Falls a bunch, and visited Snoqualmie Falls, but I’d love to go back to Franklin Falls, and maybe Wallace Falls or Twin Falls. With all the snow melt, spring is an amazing time to view waterfalls!
-
Visit a Nature Center
We recently re-visited the Cedar River Watershed Education Center and the Discovery Park Education Center, and this got me thinking that we need to take advantage of these resources in our local community more! These centers have a wealth of information and inspiration. With spring being a time of transition, it’s great to have an indoor space to sneak into when we need a break from the rain!
