As you may have learned from our post on transitioning from balance bike to pedal bike, our 4.5 year old son has been confidently riding his Woom 3 bike for several months now. It’s opened up a whole new world for our family. On our daily afternoon walks, instead of dragging him along on our 2 to 4 mile treks, we’re chasing after him as he races ahead on his bike.
Welcoming Summer with Easy Picnics in the Park
Everyone knows that babies and young toddlers are messy eaters, but I think we’ve got one of the messiest little toddlers around! Every meal at home requires a full wipe down of the child, table and high chair, plus all the sweeping, sometimes even mopping. Pulling all the chairs out from the table is required just to get to the majority of the mess. And after all that, the dog always manages to find some bits and morsels that still remain.
Lake Chelan, Washington with Kids: Stroll, Boat, Hike
Are you able to make spontaneous, unplanned travel work for your family? As a family who plans travel far in advance, you’d think that we wouldn’t be able to swing a last minute trip, but I’ve realized as of late that having young children does have it’s benefits! They are more portable and have fewer scheduled activities, which allows us to pack-up and go when an opportunity comes along!
We recently got to travel back to Lake Chelan, located in central Washington State, thanks to a friend who offered us use of his timeshare condo. We only had a few weeks of advance notice, but we were able to figure out the logistics to where Georgia (17 months) and I even had some “girls only” time before the boys arrived a couple of days later.
Olympia, WA’s Hands-on Children’s Museum: 4 Things We Love +Visitor Tips
Our kids are at the ages (17 months and 4.5 years) where children’s museums are a big deal to us. Children’s museums provide us with the opportunity to entertain, occupy and delight both of our children, each in their own unique ways.
Slaed and I are embracing this season of life rather than rolling our eyes and wishing we could be doing something that “the whole family” can enjoy. With both of our children engaged and engrossed (and learning!) in activity, we can actually take a breath, and even have a little fun.
We recently got to visit the Hands-on Children’s Museum in Olympia, Washington as part of a weekend visit to our capitol city, and we were more than impressed! Below, I’ll go into more detail in regards to everything we loved about the place, but just know that if you have young children, and live or will be visiting anywhere close to Olympia, get yourself to the Hands-on Children’s Museum!

Seattle’s Georgetown Neighborhood with Kids
If we’re not traveling somewhere for the weekend, chances are we’re still finding time to get out and explore even if it’s “in our own backyard”. One of the ways we do that is by visiting other neighborhoods around Seattle. We may not go far, but these mini-adventures nourish our wandering spirits. Georgetown is one of our go-to places when we are looking for a change of pace.
Georgetown is located about 10 minutes south of downtown Seattle, and is know for its grittiness, quirkiness, and all around creative vibe. The neighborhood now boasts several breweries, lots of family friendly eateries, and so many fun and unique shopping/browsing experiences from a trailer park mall to a handful of antique shops and galleries. Keep reading to find out some of our favorites!
Easy Backyard Activity: Build a Mini Rockery
I’m so excited to share on of our latest backyard producers of fun and enjoyment! We have a love-hate relationship with our yard, but it seems as though love is winning the more time we spend back there, and the more energy (and money) we put into making it nice.
The hate comes from the fact that it’s A LOT of work! Mowing, trimming, weeding, watering, and praying for the grass to grow into the bare patches of lawn all takes up a great deal of time. We also have a kiwi tree (yes, in Seattle), which grows out of control every summer, that we have to work to control and maintain.
This spring though it just feels different. It feels as though our hard work is paying off, and we are seeing the beauty of having a small patch of green earth that we can spend time in and relax in as a family.
I’m hoping our Bergen (our 4.5 year old) will feel the same way, so in order to create an additional play space for him, we took some time on a recent afternoon to make a mini-rockery together. We both saw the project in Dawn Isaac’s book, “101 Things for Kids to Do Outside“, and were really drawn to the idea.
