Summer Scavenger Hunt (with printable) for Kids

Summer is here, and well underway, so I thought I’d better get cracking with our summer scavenger hunt before this lovely season gets away from us! Here I’ve compiled 12 items that we think are particularly special to or can almost only be found in summer.  You won’t necessarily be able to find all 12 in one session unless you did some careful planning, but the idea is appreciate all the season has to offer.

Summer in the Seattle area is the best! We are savoring the warmer temperatures and clear blue skies, and loving that it hasn’t been too terribly hot.  I hope you are enjoying yourselves in your neck of the woods, and if not, I hope you are able to travel or adventure somewhere new to get some relief!

Travel Gear for Kids: Chasing Windmills Merino Wool

Lately instead of bringing the entire “kitchen sink” on our travels to ensure that we leave nothing essential behind, I’ve worked to make our packing simpler, more strategic, and more intentional.  It not only keeps us organized at our destination, but it also makes unpacking (the part that we all dread) so much easier!  I plan outfits and pack them folded together, use packing lists and only bring what we need (the more we travel, the better I get at this), and I think of items that can pull double duty or serve more than one purpose.

This winter, we learned about the benefits of merino wool, thanks to Ella’s Wool leggings/tubes keeping Bergen and Georgia warm on our outdoor adventures.  However, I hadn’t yet realized the advantages of wearing the fabric in the spring and summer.

This summer marked the 5th year we’e traveled to Hayden Lake, Idaho for our annual weekend with friends.  Every year we’re faced with varied weather conditions.  It’s been scorching hot (perfect for swimming, not so much for sleeping + cooking), cloudy & rainy (great for taking it easy & exploring town), hazy from nearby fires, and somewhere in between.  And every year, I’m so thankful for the time away, the chance to unplug (mostly), and the chance to really spend time with our friends that are more like family!  [Read more…]

Luxury Apartment Rental for Families: Vancouver, BC

When your 18-month old takes her first independent steps in a place, you won’t soon forget it! Yes, as I think I’ve mentioned on the blog what seems like at least a dozen times, Georgia figured out the whole walking gig at our apartment rental in Vancouver, BC.  When we arrived at the rental in Vancouver’s Crosstown district, I started to settle in.  The boys were off getting the rest of our luggage, and while I should have been unpacking and organizing a bit, I was distracted by more important matters: figuring out the wifi password and brewing a cup of coffee in the Keurig!

Out of the corner of my eye though, I noticed something unusual.  Instead of her typical crawling and knee walking, Georgia was launching herself from the coffee table and cozy white couch, and as her big brother would say, when he finally got back from unloading the car, “walking all over the place!”

Lassoing the Sun: Book Review+Video

With the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service coming up in August, I wanted to share a book recommendation, Lassoing the Sun: A Year in America’s National Parks, that will not only help you learn more about the system that began on August 25, 1916 with 35 parks and monuments, but also give you the chance to really appreciate what we have set aside for our future.

Lassoing the Sun: A Year in America’s National Parks by Mark Woods is a memoir of the author’s year long journey traveling, exploring, learning and asking important questioins about at least one national park per month.  He received an award through the Eugene C. Pilliam Fellowship in order to do so, and began the project on New Year’s day in Acadia National Park where the first rays of sun shine on the United States.

Now that our youngest is slowly but surely heading out of the baby stage, and into toddlerdom, I thought it would be appropriate to share our picks for the best baby travel gear.  We’ve thought through our routines and travel practices, and chosen the items that make travel with a baby easier, more manageable, and just generally possible!
